Home Practice

When I moved to Texas two years ago I became so intent on giving as many classes as possible that I found myself feeling overexerted and unbalanced from not making time for my personal practice. After resolving to stick to my personal practice, despite giving up a couple of classes, I confirmed what all my teachers have professed: that it is through home or personal practice that we most learn those insights about our bodies and our minds which allow us to move forward as students and teachers of Yoga.

So, when pressed for time I'll practice Adho Mukha Svanasana, Sirsasana, Sarvangasana and Paschimottanasana and after half an hour feel energized and balanced enough to explore the day's challenges. And then on a given Sunday I'll be so free and loose that I can go well into a 3-hour practice with the luxury of a restorative session at the end.

The thing is to make time daily to explore how I can approach that asana which gives me the most trouble, working my way through the sequence that will make it more accessible; or simply connecting with that family of poses and sequence which I may need today for whatever reason.
Ultimately it's about getting to know myself, strengths and weaknesses, on this path of self discovery and rejoice in all the gifts uncovered on the way.

Happy Surya Namaskar!!
